Start Spring PlantingApril 6, 2018, 8:25 am

As spring arrives, garden soil warms up and makes it the perfect environment for vegetable seeds to thrive. April is a great time to plant peas, peppers, carrots, and beets. Herbs like basil, oregano, thyme and sage also thrive as the weather gets warmer.

If you’re looking to brighten up your landscape this spring, plant bare root perennials, summer-blooming annuals, flowering shrubs, and citrus trees this month. These will grow and bloom during late spring and throughout the summer to keep your garden looking beautiful.

Remember to be mindful of the unpredictable Kansas weather this time of year. Protect your plants from extreme wind by using stakes and making a temporary windbreak with burlap or a plastic screening. Keep an eye out for sudden cold snaps, too. It helps to water before a freeze because the water insulates plants and helps them withstand cold damage. You can also place an old blanket or cloth over plants to trap soil heat during chilly nights.

If you’re wanting to improve your landscape this spring, we can help! See our selection of nursery plantings here and don’t hesitate to contact us for questions or to set up service!
